Leon Zhan
2024 AUSART Fellow/Scholar

Leon Zhan (b.2000) is an artist working across painting and sculpture born in Melbourne to Chinese immigrant parents. He completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) University, Melbourne in 2022. Central to Leon’s practice is the search for harmony and balance within the fluidity of cross-cultural hybridity, addressing the subtleties and nuances in the dance between Orient and Occident.
Leon has been awarded the 2024 AusArt Graduate Scholarship from the American Australian Association and the American Friends of the National Gallery of Australia to undertake his MFA at the Pratt Institute School of Art, New York. In addition, he was the recent recipient of the 2024 Marten Bequest Travelling Scholarship for Painting from Creative Australia.
Zhan has exhibited across Australia and the USA, recent exhibitions include Labyrinths at FUTURES, Melbourne (2024), Back to School at Ethan Cohen Gallery, New York (2023), Un-home, Museum of Chinese Australian History (2023), Craft Victoria (2023), Neo-Dynasty, Discordia Gallery (2022) and Creative Generations, Queensland Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA), Brisbane (2018).
